Trail Work Day in Santiago Oaks|wrap-up
SHARE MTB Club / Non-Dot Adventures
Santiago Oakes Regional Park – Assistance to OC Parks
January 9, 2016
The SHARE Mountain Bike Club and Non-Dot Adventures assisted the OC Parks with trail maintenance in Santiago Oaks Regional Park.
This was the most successful trail work day ever!
53 enthusiastic and core volunteers gathered to work on trails that had been perfectly prepared by recent El Nino rains. The dirt and the weather was perfect. We split into six teams to work on Goat, Hawk, Peralta, Chutes, Cactus, and Yucca. The team completed trail repair and maintenance, installed and updated water diversions, created new flow features and updated switchbacks, and worked on narrowing trails to help preserve critical habitat.
The team was welcomed in the morning with coffee and doughnuts – followed by a welcome address from SHARE Santiago Oaks Park Representative Jon Kearley. Jon organized the large group into six teams lead by experienced trail bosses. After the trail work, the tired and inspired volunteers where treated to a fantastic pizza lunch.
Great work by everyone!
The OC Park Rangers are pushing to get as much trail work in before the expected rains come in the next few months. The trail maintenance is crucial to reworking the trail in order to make sure that preventative measures are installed on the trails that will minimize the impact of the rain – the goal is to prevent soil erosion and the creation of ruts and channels on the trails.
We appreciate all of the work that the OC Parks and the volunteers from various clubs are doing to maintain the trails in Santiago Oaks to keep them safe and beautiful for everyone to enjoy!
