Trail Work Day at Peters Canyon Regional Park

Sunday March 21, 2010
8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Volunteers are needed to help park staff repair the Scout and Gnat Catcher Trails. Wear long shirt & pants, sturdy shoes and work gloves. Bring water and snacks. SHARE will supply all necessary tools.

We will be meeting at the south entrance of Peters Canyon, near Eucalyptus Trail. It’s a short hike or even shorter ride to the trail work sites.

Lunch will be provided at the completion of the trail work.

Directions to Peters Canyon South Entrance (see attached map):
Jamboree Road – North or south bound
Tustin Ranch Road -Traffic signal, turn right if coming from north. Turn left if coming from south
Pioneer Way – Traffic signal, turn right
Pioneer Road – Traffic signal, turn right
Peters Canyon Road – Stop sign, turn left
Towards the end of Peters Canyon Road, turn right thru open gate into Peters Canyon. Continue on to end of road, park on right side. Please watch for hikers & bikers, and obey the 10 mph speed limit.

Caspers Adventure Day

SHARE joined the fun at Caspers Regional Park’s Adventure Day on Saturday, March 13. Hundreds of park visitors played games, made arrowheads, took a hay ride and saw wild birds of prey. It was a beautiful Spring day to enjoy the park.

The SHARE booth included collages of club photographs of past trailwork projects, rides and events. The club gave mountain biking posters to many eager visitors. SHARE also led a mountain bike ride in Caspers Regional Park which featured several wet and rocky stream crossings, early wild flowers, some muddy spots to avoid, and featured some mountain lion tracks on West Ridge.
The SHARE booth was busy as we were one of the stops on the scavenger hunt. Do you know how many gears are on a full suspension mountain bike? Most of the participants were surprised at the answer…..27.

Other vendor participants included REI, the Sierra Club, OC Hiking Club and OC Parks. The big hit however was the Birds of Prey where visitors saw live owls and a hawk.

It was a beautiful day and fun was had by all. The park put on a very successful event and we hope that SHARE can participate in similar events in other parks.

SHARE Builds Tool Boxes for the Parks

A couple of weekends ago some of us got together to build some tool boxes (we call them coffins) for the parks. Considering that we are mountain bikers and not wood workers it turned out to be a pretty interesting day.

It all started with the bases. We actually did pretty good being new at this construction business. Everyone learned something and Robin and I learned that the power tools can be very exciting especially when you put a fresh battery in them. WooHoo!

Once you get the base built you need to have the sides ready. Steve was great with the saw and cut all the pieces we needed. Some sizes may vary but in the end they all fit!

When the boxes were all together we then started on the tops. After several hours of cutting, painting and screwing (don’t go there) we had 5 completed tool boxes.

IRC Trail Work This Weekend-Has been Canceled

Quail Hill Loop Trail Stewardship

Sunday February 28th 9am

The Quail Hill Loop Trail is currently closed for maintenance, and is undergoing several rehab and restoration projects; and needs some public TLC to get it ready for re-opening to the public.

Volunteers are needed to help with restoration planting, trail grooming, closure of non-authorized trails, and invasive weed removals.

No special knowledge needed…..just a willingness to do some good ole fashioned hands-on work and get dirty.

Bring gloves, sturdy shoes, and sun protection.

Tools and water will be provided.

Caspers Trail Work This Weekend Feb 28th

Caspers Wilderness Park monthly trail work day. Come join volunteers and staff to help maintain our trails for all to enjoy. Come prepared to work hard and give back to the park that we all love. This month we will be working on Quail Run Trail, Brushing, clearing Water Bars, Spillways and Treadwork! Because of the rain, the soil is still moist so trail work is much easier. We will be working with our hands, getting dirty and having fun! Trail work days are from 8am to 12pm on the last Sunday of every month. Meet at the parking lot near the entrance of Caspers. We may not have lunch this month due to funding, so please bring your own snacks.

Santiago Oaks Trail Work Day

19 volunteers worked the reroute of the Bumblebee trail on Saturday February 13th. There were equestrian help from the Orange Park Acres (OPA) and few high school kids that came out and did a great job. We had a handful of volunteers that had never done trail work before along with a group of experienced workers guiding them along. The new trail should be a great way to climb out if the bottom of the canyon. Once again lunch was a great success with Keith and Jim feeding the masses with pasta, salad and hot bread.

Trail work opportunity Whiting Ranch/IRC

Whitings Ranch Rangers and Irvine Ranch Conservancy staff have located an unauthorized mountain bike park in one of the canyons between Agua Chinon and Foothill Ranch. The site includes bench cut trails, wooden jumps, wooden bridges and a sand bag reinforced trail connecting from Mustard Trail all the way to the community.

This park was created after the Santiago Fire and was cut through cactus scrub habitat that has historically hosted nesting Cactus Wrens (the park was located while doing cactus restoration work for the threatened Wrens).

Whitings Ranch Rangers are planning to remove the materials and dismantle the trails on February 20th at 8:00 a.m. They have engaged Oakley to assist and have about 15 people from Oakley. They have asked if the Irvine Ranch Conservancy would be willing to assist by generating volunteers.
