Our partners, the Irvine Ranch Conservancy, will be sponsoring an exciting trail work day this weekend Saturday, February 4^th at Buck Gully in Newport Beach. 

This project will restore about 3 miles of multi-use single track in this coastal canyon which is full of interesting wildlife and mature coastal sage scrub. When complete, the trail will be open 7 days a week. We need lots of hands for vegetation clearing and possibly some tread work.

SHARE organized a trail work event at Santiago Oaks Regional Park. Twelve volunteers were there to give back to the park.

Santiago Oaks Regional Park has become a favorite Orange County destination for many of our local mountain bikers. With this park being the site of the last two SHARE Poker Rides, SHARE was more than happy to provide the people power to help maintain the park when we are asked to help. So it was no surprise with a fairly short notice we were able to pull together a group of volunteers of all ages and abilities to come out and take care of a few projects on the rangers wish lists.

The park rangers had asked us to revise the lower portion of Hawk Trail  where it meets Bobcat Meadow Trail to eliminate the unsafe T-intserction of  the trails. We also completed the planting of native plants and cactus along  the re-routed Oak Trail (aka the 3 B’s). 

The first part of the trail work day was toof complete a reroute at the bottom of the Hawk Trail to make it a more sustainable trail and eliminate an unsafe intersection with the Bobcat Meadow Trail. We found a new path and armored it rocks to build up a base for the new path. The next job was to close off the old trail and move on to some planting, with cactus and new oak trees positioned we dug in and got busy putting them in the ground. Thank you for those who showed to give back.

Afterwards, we enjoyed a well  deserved lunch at Chronic Taco.  Thanks to all who volunteered!

Thanks to all the volunteers that worked to open the new “Mentally Sensitive” trail in Aliso and Woods Canyon Wilderness Park.

The trail officially opened Sunday October 16 at 9 am. Mentally Sensitive adds additional advanced level single track in the park and offers a fine loop by climbing up the Meadows trail and down Mentally Sensitive. Exciting news at AWCWP!  There will be a trail work day to open a new trail in the south west portion of the Park that will connect with Meadows Trail and create a new loop. The new trail should be ride able in both directions, have enough technical challenges to make it interesting and will have some of the best views in the Park.  The exact location is being kept under wraps until we get a little closer to the trail work day.

Ranger Ed and staff believe that the new trail can be built in one trail work day. We will be able to drive to the trail work site. We will need around 40 or so volunteers to pull it off with as many trail bosses, experienced trail workers and newbies as possible. SHARE will be providing tools and lunch.

The trail extends between the Turtle Ridge community to West Fork trail in Bommer Canyon that can be accessed from the Bommer Canyon trail head.  This Irvine Open Space trail will be open 7 days a week.  Once opened, this single track trail will wind down from the ridge giving riders and hikers a great view of the canyon. Three cheer to the Irvine Ranch Conservancy for building such a fine looking single track. Look for an announcement coming soon for the grand opening.

New Turtle Ridge Trail

 Trail Work Day on Saturday August 13.

Volunteers from Irvine Ranch Conservancy, REI and Share Mountain Bike Club.

Where: Meet at the Los Trancos ranger station, north of El Moro on PCH between Crystal Cove Prominade and Newport Coast on the inland side.

Details: Waiver will be signed and a short safety/work description talk before heading out. Those on bikes can ride in from either Ridge Park or El Moro visitors center to the Deer Canyon campground where tools will be transported by truck. We will be digging in the dirt filling ruts and working on a creek crossing.

You will also be able to participate in member only events and get discounts at local bike shops. SHARE Mountain Bike Club of Orange County was founded in the 1988 to promote responsible mountain biking in Orange County. In our 22 + years, we have also helped to build and maintain trails in all our county parks and our local California state parks. In 2011, our help is especially needed. We have already helped to reopen most of our favorite trails. There is a lot more work to do and we hope that all our friends will come out to be a part of the rebuilding process.
