Emerald Canyon Train in Laguna Coast Wilderness Park – Open

Thank You Irvine Ranch Conservancy and OC Parks

Emerald Canyon “Trail to Nowhere” has been re-opened

With the help of non-profit organizations, members of the public and community groups, OC Parks has re-opened the Emerald Canyon Trail. The trail was closed due to extensive damage sustained after heavy rains in 2010. The trail reconstruction included constructing a 60-foot bridge over a landslide area.

New 60′ Bridge

The project was a partnership between OC Parks, as the land owner, and Irvine Ranch Conservancy and Laguna Canyon Foundation, as non-profit support groups focused on the protection and preservation of the open space. Working together with community groups such as SHARE Mountain Bike Club and other volunteers from the public, the challenging project made constant progress over a six-month period.

Initial restoration work began on Emerald Canyon back in January. The most challenging step prior to opening the trail was to complete the construction of an additional bridge over a deep gully created by the storm damage. More than 1,500 bridge components were either hand-carried along the single-track trail or hauled by a powered wheelbarrow approximately ¾ mile to the bridge location.

Once at the work-site, the components had to be partially assembled and then hoisted across the gully on a suspended cable system. The final assembled bridge weighs in at just over 10,000 pounds, and is capable of handling equestrians and light maintenance equipment loads of up to 4,000 pounds.

Vegetation along the closed trail was overgrown and needed to be heavily trimmed, to create a final width of 36 inches. Crews also elevated the trail in sections that needed a natural drain to channel runoff away from the trail surface. A wooden bridge was constructed over a large section of trail that had eroded away.

This Emerald Canyon trail follows the bottom of Emerald Canyon in Laguna Coast Wilderness Park and is one of the most beautiful wilderness areas in Orange County. SHARE highly recommends this trail.

Great Opportunity to help reopen Emerald Canyon Trail!!! February 1

Exciting Trail Work Day to Reopen Emerald Canyon Trail

SHARE/IMBA members have a great opportunity to assist OC Parks in reopening this trail is coming up! On February 1st, our partners OC Parks, LCF and IRC are having a trail work day to clear vegetation through out this area to prepare for the placement of a bridge.

RSVPs are a must! Click Here to RSVP

If you’re a OC MTB rider than  you are  probably familiar with the Emerald Canyon Trail below the BVD and Old Emerald trail intersections that are known as “The Trail To Nowhere”.  This hidden gem is one of the most beautiful trails in Laguna Beach, and goes through an incredibly diverse and beautiful range of habitat.

Unfortunately, a couple of years ago, heavy rains completely washed out a 60 foot portion of the trail leaving behind  a gully that is close to 30 feet deep, and 60 feet wide! Well the opportunity to assist OC Parks in reopening this trail is coming up! On February 1st we will be working to clear vegetation through out this area to prepare for the placement of a new bridge over the gully. Please volunteer on this day and be part of the reopening of Emerald Canyon Trail!

Safe Trails Coalition Work Shop – Wrapup

Safe Trails Coalition Workshop in Orange County

SHARE/IMBA was there!

IMBA Share the Trail

Friends of Harbors Beaches and Parks held a work shop called the Safe Trails Coalition on September 26. Steve Larson, President of SHARE/IMBA, presented on mountain biking in Orange County and responsible mountain biking. There were very few participants from the OC mountain bike community in the audience which was primarily from the hiking, naturalist, and equestrian communities. Presenters included SHARE/IMBA, OC Hiking Club, Laguna Canyon Foundation, the Battalion Chief from OCFA and the OC Parks Division Manager for South Orange County. Metrics presented by OC Parks indicate that the number of reported biker – hiker or biker – horse trail accidents are small. Unfortunately, the perception from the representative from the OC Hiking Club was that “on every hike the group goes on someone gets ran over or almost hit by a mountain bike”. SHARE/IMBA will be partnering with the OC Parks and groups such as the OC Hiking Club to better understand the problem presented and provide solutions for Orange County Trails.

SHARE/IMBA continues to work with all trail user communities to assure an optimal and safe experience.

SHARE/IMBA works to protect responsible access to Orange County trails for Mountain Bikes.
