IMBA Trail Care Crew Event – Success!

Subaru/International Mountain Bike Association

Trail Care Crew Event on Dec. 9 and Dec. 10 – Wrapup

Thanks to the International Mountain Bike Association, and especially IMBA trail care crew Morgan and Steve Lommele,  for bringing together the various Orange County mountain bike communities and land managers for two days of discussion and learning.

As part of the recent Trail Care Crew visit to Laguna Beach, IMBA partnered with Hans Rey, the Laguna Canyon Foundation, Share and other area riders to assess many of the existing legacy trails and provide feedback on how to make the trails more sustainable while at times maintaining their gravity-oriented character. After our Trailbuilding School, local riders expressed their desire to work with land managers to decommission some of their unsustainable fall-line trails and create fun, flowy, sustainable singletrack as part of a larger system of multi-use, multi-skill trails. This two-way partnership between land managers and riders is critical to success.

IMBA hosted a Club Care presentation and a screening of the movie Pedal Driven that brought together local bike industry leaders from Crank Brothers and SDG Components; pro mountain bikers like Hans Rey, Brian Lopes, and Richie Schley; club leaders from Share; and leadership from the Laguna Canyon Foundation.

Just the fact that these guys all broke bread together was enough to get the movement started.

Here is what IMBA had to say about the state of Mountain Biking in OC. “From the 70 TCC visits we’ve had in two years, Laguna is probably the best-suited to build a world-class mountain bike destination: stunning terrain and scenery, open space, industry leaders, pro riders, a sustainable club, willing partners in local land managers, and a passionate community of mountain bike advocates. It’s just a matter of channeling all of that positive opportunity into a cohesive, long-term movement, which Laguna is on the verge of doing.”

Morgan presenting trail work design training.

Steve and Morgan, See you later!  Thanks for a great time.

Thanks to Hans Rey, Crank Brothers, and the Laguna Canyon Foundation for hosting a productive and fun weekend.

Another Successful “Take A Kid MTB’ing” Day

Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day in Orange County

Over 80 kids rode in the event! With 140+ participants take on the 5th Annual IMBA event

Well if you weren’t there on October 1st you missed the biggest event of the 5 years that SHARE member Adam Davidson has been putting this local event of the national IMBA Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day. With over 140 participants of which 80 were kids there was no shortage of fun to be had. The event was broken up in 4 rides so there was something available for all age groups and riding abilities. Adam does a great job of finding sponsors to support the event and gathers enough donations so almost nobody goes home empty handed. There was another organization to benefit from all of Adam’s effort, Wheels4Life.org will be receiving a donation that will allow them to purchase at least 20 bikes for their cause. If you missed it this year you can mark down October 6th, 2012 for next years event.

Check out pictures of this year’s event and sign-up for next year’s event at: http://web.me.com/highergroundsa/RideLikeAKid/Home.html

Got Grom? 5th Annual IMBA Take a Kid Mountain Biking

Reminder – IMBA Take a Kid Mountain Biking

This Saturday is the 5th Annual OC Kids Bike, BBQ and Fun. Totally fun event!

This is an truly amazing event that according to IMBA, last year was celebrated globally in Australia, Canada, Italy, Germany, Japan, Mexico, the United Kingdom and the United States with an estimated 21,000+ participants joining the fun.  This year will also mark the 5th year we are planning a local event in Orange County which continues to grow…last year we had over 100 peeps with 50+ kids!!!  We start off with varied MTB rides based on age & skill followed by a BBQ and free kids raffle.  While the primary goal to install a love of dirt with the groms, it should be no surprise the mad fun the parents have riding along and the kids providing more “smiles per mile” than any weekend epic ride could offer.
