SHARE Volunteers at the Surf City Marathon

A great team of SHARE members and friends dusted off and lubed up their road bikes for the annual Surf City Marathon held every year in Huntington Beach on Super Bowl Sunday.

After several days of rain, wind and cold temperatures, the event was held under blue skies and cool temperatures.  In the words of Brian DeGroodt, lead cyclist for the front lead male runner of the full marathon, “coming back on the strand with the half marathoners running up PCH for as far as the eye could see, clear skies, and snow in the local mountains–while on the beach–was just an epic winter day in Southern California”.

After leading the front runners to the finish line, the cyclists returned to the course, monitoring and ensuring the safety of the pack runners.  Encouragement was given, band aides were handed out and phone calls were made.  But the heroes of the day just might be Jeff and Robin who freed a trapped marathon runner from the bathroom!
