Crystal Cove State Park Trail Work Day on Saturday January 9th Crystal Cove Interpretive Association and the California Department of Parks and Recreation in partnership with REI and Share Mountain Bike Club sponsored a very successful trail work day on Saturday January 9th, 2009.
Volunteers where treated to a beautiful winter day with the work location overlooking the ocean. Over 30 volunteers attended the event which focused on planting over 250 native plants on the old Ticketron trail in Crystal Cove State Park. Bob Gossman, Crystal Cove State Park Resource Manager noted “we are planting Lemonade Berry, Bush Monkey Flower, Laurel Sumac, and California Sage Brush to restore the coastal sage scrub habitat on the old Ticketron trail. These plants where grown from local seed specifically for restoration activities”. Sara Jayne, CCIA board member and local native plant expert said “within two years these plants will mature and you will not be able to see the old trail”.
A second team led by Robin Lemonds and Keith Eckstein (Crystal Cove State Park Volunteers and Share Mountain Bike members) focused on improvements to the new Ticketron trail. The top switchback was re-routed to improve trail sustainability and design. In addition, several drainage control features where added and poison oak was removed from edges of trail near the bottom. In October, the new Ticketron trail was built to re-establishment a sustainable single track trail for hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians by grade reduction, lengthening, and restoration. Since October, the new Ticketron trail has been widely praised as an excellent new single track trail in Orange County.
Volunteers had a great day enjoying nature and getting a little dirty planting, watering, and working on the new trail. After the trail work was completed, volunteers where treated to a great lunch. A follow-up event is being planned for March to continue planting and trail improvement activities. Trail work events are a great way to enjoy and contribute to nature and earn community service hours. We look forward to seeing you.
