Thirty Eight volunteers got out and supported Crystal Cove State Park (CCSP) on Saturday morning by completing the realignment of the Ticketron trail and laying down native seed where the old trail used to exist.

The successful event was put on by the California State Parks and Crystal Cove Interpretive Association (CCIA) in partnership with Share Mountain Bike Club and funded by a generous grant from REI.

A diverse group of volunteers – both young and old and in between -  from the REI, the Irvine Chinese Hiking Club, Team Velosport, Share Mountain Bike Club, and CCSP volunteers assembled to hear the welcome and project description project organizer and CCIA president Brad Larkins. Over the next three hours, the group completed the new single track trail and seeding project. Joy Hsieh of the ICHC said she was tired but happy and could not wait to hike the new trail.  Peter Eaton of Team Velosport rode the new trail both up and down on his mountain bike and proclaimed the new trail “fantastic”.

CCSP Resource Specialist Bob Gossman led a team of volunteers which planted native seed where the old trail was located. This team worked up the slope which had been de-compacted and regarded re-graded. Bob laughed and said, “We are now all hoping for rain”. The new trail was collaboratively designed by Dave Pryor and Bob Gossman of Crystal Cove Statue Park and volunteers Robin Lemonds and Keith Eckstein from CCSP Trail Assistant Volunteers and Share Mountain Bike Club members. The team did a fantastic job of designing the new trail. For outdoor enthusiast, the new Ticketron alignment offers not only a more sustainable trail – but is vastly more scenic, interesting and challenging while being more usable by a wider spectrum of enthusiasts. The new single trail sweeps through the coastal sage scrub environment and features several switchbacks.

Once complete, the volunteers enjoyed a hearty lunch of turkey sloppy joe’s and left with “Get Dirty” REI volunteer shirts and gift items provided by Becky from REI. The next event in Crystal Cove State Park will be on Saturday November 21 where we will continue to fine tune the new Ticketron Trail and begin planting native plants where the old trail was located. We will again be meeting at Ridge Park at 8 am.

Get out and support your state parks!
